Purpose of message:
We will learn to give thanks to God at all times and in a genuine way, an Action that will allow us to be permanently in the presence of God, enjoying the sublime experience of His Grace.

We will see how a grateful heart - not only in times of blessing but also in times of trial, crisis, anguish, pain and desolation - will produce abundant fruits for the Glory of God and will pay the way we have decided to go to the unceasing pursuit of Holiness.

The Thanksgiving of Jesus:

Opening prayer:  Jn 11, 41 – 43 So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!".

The Thanksgiving of Jesus and
the multiplication of the breads:

Jn 6, 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.

Thanksgiving in the Holy Mass:

  • Preface III: It is truly right and necessary, it is our duty and source of salvation to give you thanks and praise always and everywhere, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God ...

Gratitude: Faith in evidence:

Jn 11, 40 – 43 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

  • The importance of giving thanks in prayer, before receiving

Heb 11, 1 Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.

Enter into God's presence with Thanksgiving:

Ps 118, 1 – 21 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;     his love endures forever. (v. 19 – 21) Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.

Block 2

Thanksgiving at all times:

1 Thess 5, 18 In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.

Eph 5, 18 – 20 but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Thanksgiving in the midst of difficulties:

Phil. 4, 6 – 7 Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

2 Cor 4, 15 – 18 Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God. Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.

Reasons for our thanks to God:

• Salvation
• Spiritual inheritance
• Release
• Forgiveness of our sins
• Protection
• Mercy
• Infinite, tender, eternal, compassionate love
• Permanence among us
• Help and miracles
• Lifetime
• Eternal life
• Sacraments
• Church
• The priests
• The Blessed Virgin
• Intercession of angels and saints, etc.

Col 1, 12 – 14 Giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Ps 86, 12 - 13 I will praise you with all my heart, glorify your name forever, Lord my God. Your mercy to me is great; you have rescued me from the depths of Sheol.

Thanksgiving to God:

• Father
• Son
• Holy Spirit

#265 Give thanks to Jesus, because through Him, with Him and in Him, you can call yourself a son of God.
Forging, St Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer

Thanksgiving in intercession:

Phil 1, 3 – 6 I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Col 1, 3 – 8 We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you…

Col 4, 2 - 3 Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ…

1 Thess 1, 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers

Ingratitude:

Lk 17, 11 – 19 As he continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was entering a village, ten lepers met. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voice, saying: "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!". And when he saw them, he said: "Go show yourselves to the priests." As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" Then he said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."

2 Tim 3, 2 People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious

  • Ungrateful to God
  • Ungrateful to parents
  • Ungrateful for the favors received (rights or favors)

The consequences of ingratitude:

Heb 10, 29 – 31 Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant-blood by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace? We know the one who said:"Vengeance is mine; I will repay,"and again: "The Lord will judge his people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

How to thank?

• How do we thank God every day?
• How do we thank the priests and the Church?
• How do we thank our intercessors?
• How do we thank our relatives?
• Thanks to our teachers
• Thanks for the education
• Thanks for the work.
• Thanks for our friends and enemies: the way to holiness
• Thank God for the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother
• Thanks be to God for the care of the angels and for the intercession of the saints
• Thank God for the temptations
• Thank God for difficulties, illnesses, anguish, grief, etc.

#313 Thank you, Lord, for-by allowing temptation-you also give us the beauty and strength of your grace, that we may be overcomers! Thank you, Lord, for the temptations you allow us to be humble!
Forging, St Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer

Thank God for the triumph in Christ:

2 Cor 2, 14 – 16 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ and manifests through us the odor of the knowledge of him in every place. For we are the aroma of Christ for God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to the latter an odor of death that leads to death, to the former an odor of life that leads to life.

The Thanksgiving of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Lk 1, 46 – 55 And Mary said:"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him…

#268 Get used to raising your heart to God, in thanksgiving, many times a day. "Because it gives you this and that." "Because they have despised you." "Because you do not have what you need or you have it." -Because she made her Mother so beautiful, who is also your Mother. "Because he created the sun and moon and that animal and that other plant. -Because he made that man eloquent and made you primal ... Thank him for everything, because everything is good.
Way, St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer

The grateful heart:

Ps 100, 4 – 5 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name; good indeed is the Lord, his mercy endures forever, his faithfulness lasts through every generation.

Closing prayer…
